TWISJ! Vol. 8; 2016 (April 6)

This Week In Saginaw Jaycees! Vol. 8; 2016

April 6, 2016

My Fellow Jaycees,

I hope this message finds you in good health and spirit! The first event listed in this message is a very important one. The city of Westland has donated a large shipment of water to help Flint. The Westland Jaycees need some help unloading it. As a chapter that is so close to this crisis, I think we should be there to help. I know it is short notice, but if you are able to attend, please do so! I will be going, and would be happy to carpool. It’s a great opportunity to help a local community in need, as well as get to know Jaycees from another part of the state.

Be There!!!- Flint Water Shipment W/ Westland Jaycees, April 9 @11am
               Who: Jaycees, family and friends
What: Unload a large shipment of bottled water in Flint
               When: Saturday, April 9, @ 11am
Where: City of Flint Refuge Center, 1213 w. second St., Flint. MI. 48503.

General Awesomeness!
The D5 Social at Mountain Town Brewing Company went great! There were about a dozen Jaycees from around District 5 (seven chapters from Burton to Clare.) Jeff, one of their brewers, gave us a tour of their facility and talked us through the brewing process for all kinds of different types of brew. This included a beer called a Gruit, which predates the use of hops and was originally brewed in the middle ages over an open fire! It was wonderful to see everyone and have an fun afternoon together.
If you missed this social, hopefully you can make the next one in June. We will be having dinner in Saginaw, with a company called Gourmet Gone Wild. Gourmet Gone Wild is a company which teaches people how to cook with locally available fish and game. More information can be found on the members facebook page, on the Gourmet Gone Wild website, and will follow in a future email.

General Awesomeness!- MIJC 2015 Year End Conference
This past weekend four Saginaw Jaycees attended the MIJC 2015 Year End Conference. This is the last official part of the 2015 year (confusing, I know.) The weekend consisted of lots of awards and recognitions, trainings, and socializing. We had a fantastic time! Katie participated in first-timers, a competition for those who are new to MIJC conferences, and was welcomed with open arms by the organization. The rest of us “old hats” got to catch up with friends from around the state and country.
If you’d like to see some pictures from the event, please check out the MIJC Post It Here facebook page. There were professional photographers there the whole weekend, and all their photos are on that page. Enjoy!

TWISJ! Vol. 4; 2016 (Jan 27)

This Week In Saginaw Jaycees! Vol. 4; 2016

January 27, 2016

My Fellow Jaycees,

I hope this message finds you in good health and spirit! Last night was our first GMM of the year, and it went wonderfully! There were three people interested in the chapter who attended the orientation before the meeting, and about 15 folks for the meeting itself.

We revealed the new format for the meetings, which includes committee time and a guest speaker/presentation/training at each meeting. We also swore in the 2016 board, as well as 2 new members. In the committee time half of us hammered out the details for a February social, while the other half worked on details for the quarterly networking nights. Lastly, Nancy Kaufman from the Mid-Michigan Children’s Museum told us all about the great work they are doing and what types of volunteer opportunities exist with them. All in all, it was a very productive and eventful night!

Stardust (our new location) has been great to work with! The space provides technology for presentations, a quieter atmosphere, and a family friendly quality which we haven’t had in recent years. Lastly, the drink specials they offered us were great, and the appetizers they provided for our meeting were outstanding!

I sincerely hope that if we didn’t see you this month, we will see you in February!

As you can probably tell already, a good portion of this week’s TWISJ! will be dedicated to recapping last night’s meeting. On to business!

Be There!!! - 2015 Year End Leadership Conference
               Who: Michigan Jaycees
What: This conference, like all of them, includes great trainings and fellowship opportunities. The focus of this particular conference is wrapping up 2015. It is mind blowing to see what all the other Michigan chapters are doing! It is completely overwhelming to see how much of an impact Jaycees have on the state of Michigan. There is absolutely NO WAY you will not be excited if you attend conference.
               When: Friday-Sunday, February 19-21, 2016
Where: Doubletree by Hilton, 4747 28th St SE., Grand Rapids, MI 48512
Registration: HERE Register by January 29th, Cost $85
Note: If you are a Saginaw Jaycee member and this is your first conference, the chapter will pay for half of your registration (talk to Allison about the details.
Note: For every 4 Saginaw Jaycees who register, the chapter will pay for one hotel room.
UPDATE: There are officially 4 Saginaw Jaycees registered for conference! Per our standing procedures, this means that the chapter will cover the cost for 1 hotel room, for the duration of the conference. If more Saginaw Jaycees register, another room will obviously be needed, and the portion paid by the chapter will be shared among all of us in attendance. If we get to 8 Saginaw Jaycees registered, then the chapter will pay for a second room!

Jaycee Aid for Flint Water Crisis
As stated in last week’s TWISJ! the Burton Area Jaycees are leading the charge in raising funds to aid in the Flint Water Crisis. So far, their gofundme.com campaign has raised $2,244 from Jaycees all over the country! The funds will go towards bottled water, water filters, and filter replacements. If you’d like to donate, you can do so here.

What’s Next?- February General Membership Meeting (GMM)
Who: You, and anyone else interested in the Saginaw Jaycees
               What: Monthly business meeting
When: Tuesday, February 23 @7pm (We will start promptly at 7, so arrive a few minutes early if you want to order food or drink!)

What’s Next? Part II-February Social, U Me Paint Experience
At the January GMM, a committee decided to hold a social at U Me Paint Experience. As this decision was made yesterday, the details are still being worked out. You will be updated as I am.
Tentatively, the social will be on Friday, February 26 at 7pm. Saturday the 27th was also discussed as a possible back up date.
               More details next week!

Coming soon- Model Legislature, Lancing, March 5
Who: Jaycees from around the state of Michigan
What: Model Legislature is a one-day government/civic program organized and facilitated by the Michigan Jaycees. During this Model Legislature, real bills currently pending in the Michigan Legislature are selected and debated by participants who are comprised of current Michigan Jaycee members and guests. Participants will be divided into two political parties. They will be able to debate bills, make amendments, participate in caucus/committee meetings, and learn how bills become laws, all during a “mock” session of the House of Representatives. From electing party leaders to sitting in the BIG chairs, we’ll caucus and debate bills to decide to pass into law.

The video I attached this week has no purpose other than to make you laugh… hopefully as hard as I did. Credit to the facebook page Trex Tuesdays for this gem, Ice is Slippery.
